![]() It could also carry up to 20 551 lb (250 kg) bombs in wing-mounted bays or even Henschel Hs 293 radio-controlled glide bombs. A good aspect for sure when the airplane in question is the aerial target equivalent of the broad side of a barn. Consisting of as many as 20 or more machine guns ranging in size from 13 to 20mm, the 238 was very capable of defending itself. ![]() That's without talking about the aircraft's assessment of defensive weapons. Powered by six Daimler-Benz DB 603G inverted V12 engines, this 200,000 lb-plus (90,718 kg) behemoth could cruise at 200 mph (322 kph) across ranges of 6,620 km (4,110 miles) at altitudes in excess of 20,000 feet (6,100 m). With dimensions of 43.35 meters (142 ft 3 in) long, a 60-meter wingspan (197 ft 5 in), and a stunning 12.8 meters (42 ft) tall, an American B-29 Superfortress bomber, the largest plane in the Allied arsenal, sat comfortably within the BV 238s proportions. Soon after, the first full-scale prototype would be ready. Though not exactly identical to the 238 in terms of looks, the design allowed German engineers to study the novel, durable, and highly advanced hull that the BV 238 would use in the field. Potentially even trans-Atlantic.Ī roughly quarter-scale model of the BV 238 was constructed in German-occupied Czechoslovakia. What was required was a super heavy cargo transport airplane capable of hauling hundreds of troops, dozens of vehicles, or whatever cargo the German Wehrmacht required over vast distances. The concept was simple in theory but endlessly complex in practice. ![]() The first whisperings of an attempt to build the largest flying boat ever constructed at that time date back to early 1941, during the dog days of Operation Barbarossa. Despite finding their home on the water, Blohm & Voss flying boats were under the jurisdiction of the land-based German Air Force (Luftwaffe) as opposed to the German Navy (Kriegsmarine). Their two most notable production models were the BV 138 tri-motor, a twin-boom flying boat, and a military cargo flying boat that was smaller than the BV 238 but still nonetheless massive, called the BV 222 Wiking. These are defined as seaplanes with ship-like hulls as opposed to floatplanes using water skids instead of a landing gear.įounded in 1933, the company consolidated its name to Blohm & Voss in 1937 to avoid confusion. Similar to the British Saunders-Roe Company, Blohm & Voss specialized largely in the area of flying boats. It's a tale of desperation, ingenuity, and the prevailing idea that the war was not going to end well for the Third Reich.Ībteilung Flugzeugbau der Schiffswerft Blohm & Voss, or Hamburger Flugzeugbau for short, was the aeronautical division of the historic Blohm & Voss shipbuilding company of Hamburg, Germany. But for those among you who don't spend a portion of their waking free time grinding War Thunder's tech trees, let's take a deep dive into the story of Germany's largest military flying boat.

![]() The particles it emits are less frequent, but they are higher energy, hence the burnout of the phosphorescent material, and the damage to the dial and crystal. Radium goes a little too far beyond what is necessary, its half-life is 1620 years. That might be ok with you, but I consider that a dud. That means that in 12.3 years, the tritium markers on your watch will be glowing at 1/2 of their original brightness. In the course of 12.3 years the tritium decays so that the amount of tritium which remains is 1/2 what it was originally present. It is due to the slow release (decay) of beta particles from the heavy hydrogen that is tritium. so, not being one to place too much personal information on the web, I did the "super" thing, and filled it in.my way.Īs to radium, tritium, and other foibles: The half-life of tritium was set by nature to be 12.3 years. This worked nicely for a year, or more, when I found one day that the permissions on the board were once again changed so that I could not step foot on the BBS without filling in the personal information section of my account. Probably, but I was not involved with any other watch related internet activities, so I'll never know for sure. Within the week, I started getting spam for Rolex, and other "fine" counterfeit watches. So, I begrudgingly, and against my better judgement, registered, but left my personal information section blank. upgraded the BBS, and in so doing, they changed things so that unregistered guests (such as myself) were no longer allowed to post. Nah, someone has to empty the trash, and change the coffee filters at The Daily PlanetĪ long time back, Tom C. In the end, they found absolutely nothing of significance that was radioactive. They went over every inch of his shop, house, yard, and vehicles with radiation detectors. The moon suited guys decended apon him, and took him off to a EPA/DOE medical facility where the medical technicians scrubbed every inch of his body until it was quite raw. I have a friend (whom I have known for 25+ years) who is a surplus dealer who accidentally got a bunch of government surplus neutron detectors, that hadn't been decontaminated prior to sale. I have heard credible stories of watchmakers that have had their shops shut down, and decontaminated by EPA/DOE guys in moon suits. They arrested the driver, and got from him the location where the "radioactive" scrap was picked up.Īnyway, my point is the level of hysteria over radioactive materials has reached a point where radium dials on watches might draw unwanted attention to their wearers/owners. These roadside detectors now litter the interstate highway system, and appear at the gates of most public facilities that take truck traffic. The TSA/homeland security guys were clued into this fact by catching a truck (that was carrying a load of scrap) with one of their road side radiation detectors. It occurs to me that I recently read an artical in my local newspaper about a scrap yard that was shut down by the EPA because it had some old WWII airplane instruments with radium dials. Just some things to think about before you accept radium dials into your collection. Your body expects to have a certain amount of radium in your bones (radium behaves like calcium chemically), so it is hard to say whether this will increase your risk of cancer, or not. Given enough years of this, some damage might occur. If a bit of radium gets inhaled, and lodges in a sinus, or in your lungs, it will spend its time there 24/7, for the next 1600 years, shooting alpha, some beta, and gamma particles, at a slow rate, out through your body. The big risk to a watchmaker is the dust that breaks free of the dial can easily be inhaled. We do spend our time with our noses very close to our work. but given time, it destroys the binders, and becomes somewhat friable. The radium is bound into the paint or wax very well. Radium paint and waxes, when new (and not ingested, or painted on your body!) are essentially harmless. Lead paint, arsenic compounds, mercury compounds, organic solvents, fertilizer, all would cause malaise of some sort if ingested. I cannot imagine the ignorance it would take to intentionally ingest paints and other chemicals used in industry. and, from time to time, they even painted dials. They did amazingly stupid things like: point their brushes with their tongues and lips, paint their teeth, paint their finger nails, paint their lips (and other body parts to surprise their husbands/boyfriends. The important point of the Radium Girls story (that many people miss in their hysteria over radioactive materials) is these girls were simply begging to be damaged by the substance. Did I do something wrong? Am I just supposed to leave the refresh rate where it is? Like. I have it running in compatibility mode, DirectX 9.0 is already installed, my game files are verified and working. No one else is having this problem either, that I could find on Google (or really anywhere else). ![]() I have no idea what's happening, or how to fix it. I have to switch to a second desktop to even do anything, and I still can't get it to quit without restarting my entire desktop. It's stuck on top of every other application, and I can't even ALT-F4 out. The entire game goes black, as if it's changing, brings up the menu once again in high quality (no longer fuzzy or "vibrating"), but I can't click on anything, there's no sound, and I can't alt-tab away to another application. My aspect ratio is set to auto, which is fine, I try changing to to 16:9 and it works. I go to options to check out the graphics/display settings. It starts extremely fuzzy-looking despite being in 1920x1080 (my screen resoultion), and a lot of the settings and static assets are vibrating (yes, vibrating, like they aren't still? idk how to explain it). The levels will be listed in the story order so they're easier to find. There is no correct order though, so deal with them as you wish. Lost Island next for the Golden Shotgun and Silver SMGs cheats (quicker kills) and finally Peru for Infinite. Greece would be next as having all weapons available is ideal for the Lost Island levels, and infinite shotgun ammo is always fun. You also get infinite SMG ammo afterwards, meaning you can just unload into future enemies without worrying about ammo either. I would say that completing the Egypt Time Trials first would be best as infinite health means not worrying about damage from enemies or falling, meaning less dodging and climbing down. The best order to complete the Time Trials in is debatable, based on the cheats you unlock after beating them, as the cheats are then able to be used in the other Time Trials, making them easier. On several occasions, I completed the levels with no more than 1 minute to spare, which after 27 minutes of effort is a bit too tight. The Time Trials are tricky, there's probably a couple of minutes leeway on the longer levels, and only up to 30 seconds on the shorter ones. It's a one run go, and the timer doesn't stop if you die. You can't reload checkpoints like the main game. With infinite health enabled, you can avoid most fights in the game, though some will need to be fought as the enemies' presence will hinder certain task such as moving objects. If not dying actually causes you a delay (top of a long climb for example), disable the cheat mid-fall to revert to the last checkpoint if it's more convenient. ![]() ![]() Once you unlock infinite health, if you accidentally fall from a large height, you won't die.
